WHY violin?
Why study the violin? We’ve all heard the reports that listening to Mozart or studying a musical instrument helps boost kids’ test scores. But playing an instrument is about much more than a bevy of benefits to your brain! True, studying music refines fine motor skills and teaches kids dedication in the pursuit of excellence. But most importantly, by playing an instrument we interact personally with musical thoughts that touch our hearts and our emotions. This engagement with works of beauty, including those by the great composers, makes us feel differently and perceive the world in a new way. To give a child a musical instrument helps them to become expressive, sympathetic, perceptive and compassionate people who understand that our love for and fascination with music is a fundamental part of what makes us human. And it is fun!
The violin is a very special instrument, as the tone produced with the bow can be “singing” and sustained or short and very rapid. Combined with great flexibility in the creation of the pitch and a very wide range, in the hands of a skilled player the violin is tremendously expressive. It is also very portable, which makes it easy to play with others in groups.
