Intro to Suzuki Method
I teach according to the Suzuki Method, also known as the Mother Tongue method or Talent Education. (Read more about Suzuki here and here). This learning approach was developed by a remarkable Japanese violin teacher named Shinichi Suzuki, who realized that ALL the children that he observed – not just those deemed “talented” – were able to learn to speak Japanese with a high degree of skill at a young age. Suzuki felt that the principles of language learning – immersion in an environment of constant exposure to the language, repetition without judgment, and constant encouragement from the parents – were highly applicable to learning music. The Suzuki approach involves listening to recordings of the pieces to be learned, learning as beginners by hearing rather than written music, motivation by observing and participating with a group of peers, and parental involvement in the learning process.
